After months of enhanced public engagement, including a series of public hearings, County Planning staff has unveiled four redistricting draft maps for consideration. In a process that is required by federal and state law, redistricting seeks to adjust district boundaries so that the districts continue to accurately reflect the makeup of the population (using latest data from the U.S. Census.)
Utilizing special redistricting software, Mariposa County G.I.S. staff has developed four map proposals that consider the required census data, along with a list of state-mandated criteria. (Full criteria can be found here (PDF).) All four of the draft proposals that have been developed reflect different ways that the same data and criteria can be represented.
The public is now invited to review the proposals (link at the bottom) and provide input prior to November 1st. Hard copy feedback can be mailed via U.S.P.S. mail to the Clerk of the Board, PO Box 784, Mariposa, CA 95338, or dropped off at the Board of Supervisors Office at 5100 Bullion Street, Mariposa. Feedback in digital form can be emailed to redistricting@mariposacounty.org
Public input can also be provided during one of the two public hearings that have been scheduled to consider the proposals. The first hearing will be held on Monday, November 1st at 6 PM in the Chambers at the Government Center, and the second at 2 PM on Tuesday, November 2nd (also in the Chambers.)
Due to a state mandated completion deadline of December 15th, the Board will be selecting one proposal at the conclusion of the November 2nd public hearing. The selected map will then move on through the two-step ordinance process required for codification, with the ordinance scheduled for introduction on November 23rd , and adoption occurring on December 7th.
Anyone with questions should contact the Clerk of the Board at (209) 966-3222, option 2, or by emailing redistricting@mariposacounty.org
