Program Integrity Unit is a separate fraud, other investigations and quality assurance unit, independent of the units performing eligibility and benefit determination functions. The primary duties of the Unit are the enforcement of the provisions of the Welfare and Institutions Code. Investigators in the Unit shall be peace officers pursuant to Penal Code section 830.35.

Upon receipt of a fraud allegation or the observation of conditions which, based on knowledge of the case, provides a reason to suspect that fraud exists or has been attempted, the reporting party shall forward a complete and detailed referral to the Program Integrity Unit. An investigation of the report will be done and, if warranted, the unit will file a request for complaint with the District Attorney's Office for further action.
