The Mariposa Creek Parkway Master Plan establishes a coordinated and collaborative plan for nearly four miles of dedicated bicycle and pedestrian facilities throughout the Mariposa Creek Corridor. More than a conveyance for active transportation modes, the Parkway has been imagined as a place for the community to come together, celebrating and contributing to the natural and cultural resources that make the County of Mariposa special. Using extensive stakeholder engagement and community outreach, including the four-day Creek Week festival, the planning process identified clear community preferences for the future of the Parkway, which provides a roadmap for achieving the community’s vision for this transformative public project. This project was supported by a grant from the Caltrans Transportation Planning Grant Program.
The master plan emphasizes three essential themes: health and wellness, community and creativity, and education and environment. These themes act as lenses to help organize Parkway amenities and design decisions. By layering the themes and offering a variety of experiences, the master plan promotes a sense of stewardship among community advocates, framing the Creek as an integral part of living in Mariposa. In addition to its core function as an active transportation link between essential community destinations, the master plan embraces Mariposa Creek’s role in the local and regional watershed, and identifies landscape restoration strategies to enhance Mariposa Creek’s green infrastructure benefits. The master plan also articulates the Parkway’s role in supporting the local economy, expanding tourist offerings in town, providing an active transportation route between attractions, telling authentic, inclusive stories about local identity and heritage that celebrate and promote rural sense of place.
